Bone lab activity for forensics or Science in Fiction

In Science in Fiction class, we have a lab that is extremely popular. In this lab, we work with bones and tools to determine the ability to identify the tools used to make marks on bones. Goggles must be worn in this lab!  I have a contact in a meat processing plant that provides me with educational bones from a variety of animals. Usually larger animals like cows and pigs. I always also buy chicken drum stick and baby back ribs. The purchased bones must be raw and devoid of meat or flesh material to the best of your ability. I usually cut the meat off the bones and then cook it and eat it. Ah the price I pay for science. Anyway, I take all these different bones into class. The students get one of each type of bone per lab group. I give them dissecting trays to work with the bones in. Then I give them a variety of tools.

Examples of the tools are listed here:
phillips head screwdriver
flat head screw driver
chisels of assorted sizes
awls
claw hammer
tack hammer
ball-pean hammer
dissecting probes
knifes
scalpels
hack saws
camp saws
hatchets
punches
and whatever else they suggest or I can dig out of my garage. The only time I refused is when they wanted a chain saw.

total supply list:
dissecting trays
gloves
goggles
stereoscopes
tools of destruction
assorted raw bones
aprons or junk shirts to protect clothes
cleaning supplies for afterwards because pieces will fly and lab tables will have marrow and material on them.
zip lock bags to save bones if the students need an additional day to finish
method of refrigeration for bones

I also give them a sheet to complete which works best if you have the students trade the bones after they make marks in the bones with another group who has to figure out which tool made the mark
