Best pictures of Camping opening weekend at Moffitt Beach Campground

Sunset from my site May 20, 2016

The full moon was out and this picture just doesn't do it justice but I still like the look of the moon through the trees

No camping picture set is complete without your fire!

And what camping trip is complete without s'mores? And nice view behind my fireplace of the little cove.

Trillium at Moffitt Beach Campground

Trillium at Moffitt Beach Campground.

When I was a kid, we used to call these "stink pots" because they were so smelly, obviously.

These red ones are endangered species that are illegal to pick in New York State.

There was a larger quantity of these multicolored ones.

If you see these, please do not pick or trample these plants!

Moffitt Beach Camping facilities review

The staff was friendly and helpful. They sell kiln dried firewood near the gate house. It was a little expensive, but it was great to burn.

Beach is very nice. Here's a family crossing the road to get to the beach.

One section of the picnic area

picnic area is spacious and has a pavilion, there are additional picnic areas on the other side of the road near the parking area and new easy to use dump station.
The bathrooms in the area around 238-255 was new with showers. I really like the way the bathrooms have been reconfigured to unisex showers outside of the actual toilet area. It keeps the toilet area from getting all hot and steamy and feeling wet all the time, plus with them outside with individual doors, you don't have to sit around and wait while the showers in the other sex bathroom are empty.
the building and it has a parking area in front.

shower section

shower stall. It's roomy enough I can reach out both directions and just touch the walls. The curtain was wide enough to prevent the water spraying out to my dry things. And the Hot Water was plentiful. I was pleased with the showers and bathroom facilities.

Moffitt Beach Campground site review

I don't know about you but I hate booking on-line and not knowing if the site I book will be roomy, or too small, or hard to get my camper into. I decided to take a tour of Moffitt Beach Campground and make notes of sites that I wouldn't want to use. I'm including a few pictures to give you ideas. I also have a list of favorite sites at the end of this section.

First of all, the vast majority of sites are appropriately described in Reserve America for the side equipment that can fit in them. However, just because your equipment can fit in it, it may not be a good site. I'm going to point out a few of the good and some of the sites that may not be ones you would want to choose.

1a, 2,a 3a, 4a, and 32 are flat, open small sites right on the main strip. The good aspect of these sites is if you have kids that want to spend a lot of time at the beach you can see them from your site. If you go as a group, you may not mind the lack of privacy these sites give.

Sites 5-11. It's a small dead end hill. The sites are small, unlevel, and there's no way I would consider site 10 as the pull through. I went in my truck and had trouble making it in and out without any equipment attached.

Sites 12-23: a small circle right near the picnic area, again might be ok with kids that you want close to the beach, but  they were very small and lots of roots. Site 20 says a 20 foot can back in, I'm not a professional trailer driver, but I'm not bad, and there's no way I could fit my trailer in that site. If it's a small site and I need to use my tent, then I'd prefer a flat spot, not roots. this is a picture of  I believe site 22 and those roots are all through the site and most of the sites in this circle.

Sites 24to 31:  24-26 I wouldn't want to use, but the rest of the sites in this area are ok.

Sites 33-78: Further from the beach as the numbers increase,  36 and 38 must have just lost a few large trees but are fairly flat and would be ok especially if you need two sites.

52 says a tent site and it's flat and roomy enough, but it shares a driveway with 54 so hopefully you get along with your neighbors.  58 is a nice enough site, but it has 2 posts very close on either side of the driveway, very hard to maneuver. You need to be really good at backing up your equipment to get that 20 foot piece in between the posts.  64 would also be hard to back into, but I believe they have it listed as tent only, so that works.  65 and 67 are shared space, better if you need two sites.  70 and 71 are tent only as Reserve America advises. 78 is a no go.

106-171: most are very nice and roomy. The exceptions are 151, 149, 148, 138, 167, and 169.   Site 161 is large but unlevel and hard to back into. A lot of this area is more wooded, fairly flat and some really large sites that have some space between them and the net site. Some of the water sites make my list of favorite sites.

176-259: many of these sites are what you think of when you think of a campsite in the Adirondacks.
The exceptions are: 178 is small, 180 is hard to back into, 181, 211, 215, and 217 my notes just say yuck. 193 is a nice enough site, but hard to back into, as is 196, 198, 205, 220.   227 is supposed to be a pull through but it looks like a cut through for the road more than a site.

The picture above is site 253.

Most sites are nice and big and spacious.

I could have a party in this one!

Site 223. most of the sites on the water side in this circle are like this.

So nice overlooking the lake

If only I could have a sunny day to really show off this site!

This is my site, 252, not only can I fit my camper, my truck and my tent, look how roomy it still was. It's on a little bay which is great to keep the power boats away from your site. I could still put my kayak in but there are a lot of rocks that give very little depth in the cove.

So some of my favorite sites are 112, 114, 117, 118, 207, 221-226, 229-242, 250-252a. So basically the majority of sites are roomy and appropriately sized based on Reserve America, but there are some I'd just avoid.

Moffitt Beach Campground Review part 1: general information

picture from my site at sundown

We went to opening weekend at Moffitt Beach Campground on May 20th, 2016. It had been a long time since I had been there. The staff was very friendly and efficient. The facilities were clean and updated. There was a newer parking lot and dump station down near the beach. Some of the rest rooms had been updated as well.
The campground is located on Sacandaga Lake, Speculator, N.Y.
The beach is narrow, but quite long. This is a panoramic view. As always, it was cloudy when I went.
I am going to also post information about he individual campsites and facilities as well, but as an overall review, I was very pleased with the facilities and staff at Moffitt Beach Campground.

Lichens, mosses, and fungi, Oh My

We were in the Adirondacks last weekend and there were these rocks that were completely covered with layers of lichens and mosses. The tree stump also is covered in lichens and the area surrounding them had different species of mosses as well.

Hummingbird fluffed to stay warm

With the early warmth this season, the hummingbirds arrived early. Unfortunately, shortly after their arrival, we had a relapse into very cold weather. This poor little bird is normally very skinny, but when it sits on the railing, it fluffs it's feathers to try and insulate itself.

Mayfaire on the Green VI in Holland Patent, N.Y.

There's a small village in upstate New York that tries to keep the community spirit alive with a variety of activities. This weekend, May 14 and 15, 2016 they had an activity called "Mayfaire on the Green"  The town park was taken over by minstrels, sword fighting, a mermaid, and even a dragon. It's a small event, but those that partake were in the spirit, dressed the part and enjoyed themselves.

What to do before camping: #2 give your tent a test night

Once you know your tent if functional, take it for a test run at your house. We set up this dome tent on the back deck for a trial run.

Things to do before camping: #1: check your tent.

If you plan to tent, and have purchased a new tent, One of the most important things to do is to make sure you know how to set up your tent before you go. This is a brand new L.L. Bean backpackers tent. It's so much better to open it up and make sure you know how to set it up and make sure all parts and pieces are present and functional, than finding out there's a problem out on the trail in the rain. Always check out your supplies before heading out. I find the living room  a great place to set up if you can, much more comfortable to crawl around, and it's dry.

First Hummingbird of the Year

Hummingbirds traditionally show up at my house on or around May 15th. This year because of El Nino, I decided to put the feeder out early. It wasn't out more than an hour before it was visited by this little one.

Peony has mutualistic relationship with ants

This peony bud is crawling with ants, but the ants help to open the bud so the flower can emerge.

Guinea Fowl hitchhiking

I was driving down the road near my house and I see these two Guinea fowl wandering along the side of the road. They didn't try to run away as we drove up. I'm assuming they belong to someone, but they weren't right in front of a house or farm. I think they were on the lamb.

Fourth Lake, Inlet, N.Y. wonderful location for a natural getaway

I seem to have a knack for being places on overcast and rainy days. We just claim the black cloud follows me anywhere. But I think if I like these places well enough to take their pictures on rainy days, just imagine how amazing they would look on nice days! Inlet has a large variety of camping and cabin rentals available. I highly recommend this area for anyone who loves nature.

Fourth lake from the boardwalk in Inlet, N.Y. May 14, 2016

Back toward the beach. The docks are still pulled in from the winter, but are getting ready to go out for the summer.

Yup, that's my black cloud making it's appearance. still look at those pine trees and how the water insists on shimmering even in the darkness

Inlet, N.Y. boardwalk along canal and beach

The town used carve names into the boards for the boardwalk as a fund raiser. My uncle from Delaware loved the Adirondacks and used to drive up to visit as often as he could. He was one of the last people to get in on this way to memorialize his love of the area. They have additional fund raisers now. You can buy a bench for the town, or a paver for the walkway being created from the parking area to the beach.

The Inlet area has a huge variety of campgrounds and cabin rentals to enjoy all the hiking, boating, and nature activities you can think of. It's a small, rustic village with a few gift shops, restaurants, the basics. It's a small, cute, rustic, tourist town that is still enjoyable.

Canal between Fourth and Fifth Lake, Inlet, N.Y.

Inlet, N.Y. has a beautiful public park with a playground, picnic area, baseball field, tennis courts, and most importantly, access to fourth lake. These pictures show the canal between fourth and fifth lakes. It's very scenic and has a walkway along one side of the park that edges the canal.

Lichens on Cedar

These lichens were on a tree in the Arrowhead Park in Inlet, N.Y.
